Restrictions are loosened as of Monday February 7th in Ontario’s long term care homes, following more than a month of strict rules aimed at slowing the Omicron variant.

The number of designated caregivers per resident increases from two to four, though only two may visit at one time.

And residents who’ve had at least three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine are allowed to resume social day trips.

Restrictions will be eased further starting February 21st, when general visits from individuals five years and older who’ve had at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine will be allowed to resume.

And from that day forward, long term care residents will be allowed to have three visitors at a time, and ALL residents may go on social day trips regardless of their COVID vaccination status.

As of Friday February 4th, 313 Ontario nursing homes were in COVID-19 outbreaks. Over the course of the pandemic, 4139 Ontario long term care residents have died after contracting COVID-19 (as of Friday February 4th), up from 4125 on Thursday February 3rd. The vast majority of these deaths were in the first and second waves of the pandemic, but people have been dying in nursing homes during the current Omicron wave.

Most nursing home residents have received a fourth dose of COVID vaccine, while long term care staff have until mid-March to get a third booster shot. The original date was January 28th, but was postponed to allow for a great uptake among staff.
