It was an epic battle, but Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime fell just short of a major upset at the Australian Open.
Daniil Medvedev of Russia rallied for a 6-7, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over the Canadian in the men’s quarter finals.
The second seeded Medvedev became the top-ranked tennis player in the season-opening grand slam, after unvaccinated Serbian Number 1 Novak Djokovic was deported from the country.
Russia’s Medvedev fought off a match point, while trailing 5 – 4 in the second set.
“I was not feeling my best and Felix was playing unbelievable, serving unbelievable, he was you know, all over the place. I didn’t really know what to do, so I was like, what would Novak do,” Medvedev confessed.
Medvedev now faces No. 4 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the semifinals.
