The NDP says it’s working with the ethics comissioner and plans to file a formal disclosure report on a rocking chair given to party leader Jagmeet Singh’s wife in return for posting about it on social media.
Gurkiran Kaur Sidhu posted it December 10, then Sunday Jagmeet Singh posted one of him cuddling their newborn daughter while sitting in the rocker.
”The chair was given to Gurkiran with an expectation that she would promote it on social media,” said party spokesperson Melanie Richer.
”There was no expectation that Jagmeet would post about it.”
”We are working with the ethics commissioner, as we always do,  to ensure that any gifts received by Jagmeet or Gurkiran are declared and that we are in compliance with the Act.”
”That being said, while they’re extremely grateful, they’ve realized their error and will be paying for the gift,” added Richer.
The Conflict of Interest Code for MPs says neither politicians nor any member of their family can accept gifts that ”might reasonably be seen to have been given to influence the  member in the exercise of duty or function of his or her office.”
Some gifts, valued under $200, are allowed with conditions.
Any over that amount have to be reported to the Ethics Commissioner’s office within 60-days.
The rocking chair costs $1,895.
