There are COVID-19 outbreaks at 208 long term care homes in the province, about one third have no resident cases.

In light of reduced staffing due to OMICRON infections, Opposition Leader Andrew Horwath and other advocates are calling for urgent action to hire thousands more workers, prioritize booster shots for residents, and provide N95 masks for all staff and visitors.

“There are many, many things that the government could and should be doing to address what’s unfolding in long term care and it’s not only shocking but it’s frightening for family members and it’s tragic,” said NDP leader Andrea Horwath.

“Frankly, the NDP and Andrea Horwath have been irresponsible,” said Minister Rod Phillips saying the medical advice does not call for N95 masks. Phillips says he’ll follow the science and won’t take advice from ” a lady who as far as I know isn’t a doctor.”

While the province rolls out 4th shots, more than 10,000 long term care residents still don’t have a third booster shot. Minister Phillips says 90 percent of eligible residents have received their vaccines doses but points out some can’t medically receive them and unlike staff, vaccines are a choice for senior residents.
