The world junior hockey championship has been cancelled.
The tournament being held in Edmonton and Red Deer has been dealing with COVID-19 outbreaks in several of the teams in recent days.
That has led to a handful of games being forfeited.
In a statement, the IIHF says its council determined the integrity of the event had been compromised after a third game had been forfeited in the span of two days.
““We owed it to the participating teams to do our best to create the conditions necessary for this event to work,” IIHF President Luc Tardif said in the statement. “Unfortunately, this was not enough. We now have to take some time and focus on getting all players and team staff back home safely.”
It will be the first time in 44 years that there will be no champion awarded at the event.
