It is widely reported that Canadians could soon be warned against non-essential travel outside of the country.

This measure is being considered by the Trudeau Liberals in light of the new Omicron variant, which is much more transmissible than earlier COVID-19 variants.

Reports also indicate border testing and quarantine measures could be ramped up at Canada’s airports.

In a call last night, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau consulted Canada’s premiers on additional border and travel measures that could help slow the community spread of Omicron.

The first ministers also noted the potential for a rapid and strong resurgence of COVID-19 cases in Canada that could put a strain on health-care systems.

The readout of the call says the prime minister and the premiers agreed that the key to moving beyond the pandemic is to ensure that as many Canadians as possible, including children, get vaccinated and have access to third shot boosters.

There were no details on whether the government plans to change any travel restrictions.
