As concerns mount about the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health is planning to hold a news conference at 3pm Tuesday, two days ahead of his regular weekly update.

The last minute event for Dr. Kieran Moore comes one day after members of Ontario’s science table released concerning new data about how the Omicron variant is spreading in the province.

Scientific director Dr. Peter Juni warns he’s “never seen anything like this and people cannot imagine the sheer scale of what we’re talking about here.”

Dr. Juni says data from the United Kingdom indicates protection against Omicron likely starts to wane about 12 weeks after receiving the second dose of a COVID vaccine.

He reinforced the idea that this is a three dose variant, and everyone needs to get boosted as fast as possible.

Late Monday night, the president of the Ontario Hospital Association announced that hospitals in the province are urgently working to reactivate mass immunization centres.

University Health Network President and CEO Kevin Smith says this plan is in the works.

Currently, only select groups and people 50 plus are eligible to book a third dose in Ontario.

Those 18 and older are scheduled to begin bookings January 4th, but many experts have called on the governing Ford PCs to bump up that date because of the Omicron variant.
