A new report by the auditor general reveals major cracks in the system when it comes to enforcing Canadian border measures to keep international travellers from bringing cases of COVID-19 into the country.

The Public Health Agency of Canada had no idea what became of over half the travellers suspected of flouting quarantine orders, after the agency referred their suspicions to law enforcement.

The auditor looked at quarantine enforcement between last July and this June.

While auditor general Karen Hogan gave the health agency credit for improving its systems since the early days of the pandemic with things like the ArriveCan app, there were still notable gaps in tracking test results and compliance with quarantine orders.

The report comes as Canada puts in place several stringent border measures, including mandatory quarantines, in response to the spreading Omicron variant.
