A number of dignitaries joined John Tory to mark what the city calls a major milestone in the continuing evolution of central Etobicoke.
The Toronto mayor, Deputy Mayor Stephen Holyday, representatives from the Mississaugas of the Credit were on hand for the reconfiguration of the Six Points Interchange.
”This was once known as Spaghetti Junction because all roads wound around each other, just like you see in a pot of spaghetti,” Tory said.
”Now we’ve transformed the transportation infrastructure to better suit what is now to come, which is a vibrant community centre for Etobicoke.”
There are three new street names recognizing local community landmarks, Indigenous language and a notable long-time resident.
Adobigok Pathway – Adobigok means ”where the alders grow” in Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe).
The Misssissauga First Nation called Etobicoke Creek and area aorund it ”Adobigok.”
Biindagen Trail – Biindagen means ”enter,” ”come in” or ”welcome” in Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe). This name was proposed as an encouraging phrase welcoming residents to the new Etobicoke Centre.
Jerry Howarth Drive – Long-time area resident and former voice of the Toronto Blue Jays, Jerry Howarth, was one of the first sports broadcasters to refuse to use team names that were offensive to Indigenous peoples, bringing the issue to the forefront in mainstream media.
Planning started 10 years ago with work beginning in 2017.
With road construction in the area complete, space has been made available for new parks, wide boulevards, as well as housing, services for current and new residents, and employment in the neighbourhood.
Construction of a new Etobicoke Civic Centre, at Kipling Avenue and Dundas Street West, is expected to start in February 2023.
It’ll include municipal offices, a civic square, a city-run community recreation centre, a public library, a child care centre.
Two sites have been identified in Etobicoke Centre for new, mixed-income housing, including new affordable rental units.
