It’s being called a bold, accelerated climate strategy.
Toronto Mayor John Tory has announced a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Toronto to Net Zero by 2040, ten years earlier than initially proposed.
Targets also include a 45 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the city by 2025, on the way to a 65 percent reduction by 2030.
The Transform T.O. Net Zero Strategy provides a roadmap of actions to achieve reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels.
Toronto City Councillor Mike Layton (Ward 11 University-Rosedale) says key to reaching these targets is changing the way we think about commuting.
“If we’re not serious about getting people around our city in a way that is outside of single occupancy vehicles, so public transit, walking and cycling, we will simply not meet our stated target for the reduction in greenhouse gases,” Layton implored.
The report goes to the City of Toronto Infrastructure and Environment Committee next Thursday, and if approved, to Toronto City Council December 15th.
If adopted by Council, Toronto will be one of only three big cities in North America with a target of net zero by 2040.
