There were cheers outside a Georgia courthouse and tears in the courtroom when a disproportionately white jury found three white men guilty of shooting to death Black jogger Ahmaud Arbery last year.
Greg McMichael, son Travis and neighbour William Bryan face minimum sentences of life in prison.
It’s up to the judge to decide whether that comes with or without the possibility of parole.
Even if that possibility is granted, someone convicted of murder must serve 30 years before becoming eligible.
The McMichaels grabbed guns and jumped into a truck to chase the 25-year-old Arbery after seeing him running in their neighbourhood.
Bryan joined the pursuit in his own pickup and recorded cellphone video of Travis McMichael killing Abery.
It was leaked online two months later.
In a statement, President Joe Biden says the convictions show the criminal justice system is ”doing its job,” though the murder was a ”devastating reminder of how far we have to go in the fight for racial justice in this country.”
