Tomorrow at 8am, bookings open in Ontario for children ages 5 to 11 to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Health Minister Christine Elliott made the announcement this past hour.

Bookings may be made through a variety of channels; the provincial COVID-19 vaccination portal or the contact centre at 1-888-999-6488, directly through public health units using their own booking systems, participating pharmacies and select primary care providers.

Elliott says appointments across the province will be available as early as Thursday.

She also says first and second doses may be scheduled 8 weeks apart.

“We’re following the eight week protocol,” Elliott told reporters, “That’s what (Chief Medical Officer) Dr. Moore recommends and that’s what we’re going to be following for children 5 to 11.”

In order to book an appointment, children must be turning five years old by the end of 2021. If a child turns 12 before their second dose, they will be given the adult shot.

Children 5 to 11 in the U.S. have been receiving their vaccines since early November.

Approximately one-million children aged five to 11 in Ontario are eligible to receive the pediatric Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, which was approved by Health Canada on Friday.
