Over 100 members of the CAF are in Abbotsford to help construct a flood levee in the Fraser Valley area.

With rain in the forecast for next week the mayor says urgent dike repairs are needed to prevent catastrophic flooding in the city.

Henry Braun has estimated the cost of rebuilding could top $1-billion.

B.C.’s public safety minister has hinted at restrictions on all but essential travel through hard hit areas, including the Fraser Valley and region around Merritt.

Trained inspectors are going to Merritt to start assessing properties.

The Canadian Bankers Association says seven of its members, including TD, BMO, Scotiabank and HSBC Bank Canada, Canadian Western Bank, National Bank and Tangerine Bank, are donating a combined $235,000 to flood disaster relief.

Three of the banks – BMO, CIBC and RBC – have also made separate donations totalling $150,000.

The Canadian Red Cross, Salvation Army, SPCA and United Way are among at least 10 groups raising money or offering aid to flood victims.
