New Defence Minister Anita Anand has announced she’s transferring the investigation and prosecution of sexual misconduct cases within the Canadian Forces into the civilian justice system.
It’s one of the first things Anand’s done since assuming the portfolio last month.
The move follows a recommendation retired Supreme Court justice Louise Arbour gave to Anand’s predecessor, Harjit Sajjan in October.
Arbour’s leading an external review into sexual harassment and misconduct in the military, advising Ottawa on how an independent, external reporting system, can be put in place.
Her review, which started in April, is expected to last about a year.
The military’s been the subject of a series of sexual misconduct probes that have seen nearly a dozen current and former senior military leaders sidelined, investigated or forced into retirement.
