Premier Doug Ford is consulting with hospital CEOs, local medical officers of health and other health-care organizations asking for input on vaccine mandates for staff.
He’s sent a letter to hospital administrators asking for their input.
Many hospitals have already their own mandates that go beyond the provincial policy of vaccines or frequent testing.
And some have already fired staff who didn’t get immunized by their deadline or placed them on unpaid leave.
The Premier was asked about Quebec’s decision to delay mandatory vaccines for health care workers, fearing a staff shortage where 22,000 workers in that province remain unvaccinated.
Ford’s letter says while a province wide mandate is being called for, it’s important not to strain staffing resources.
Ford is also asking the hospital CEOs specifically what impact a mandatory policy would have on diagnostic procedures or elective surgeries. He’s given hospital administrators until October 19th to respond to his letter.
