Members of Toronto’s homeless community and their advocates are asking for a better winter plan from the city.

The Shelter Housing Justice Network has issued a report  with several recommendations for the city including extending through the winter the leases on hotels used for the homeless during the pandemic.

The group also wants the city’s no-camping bylaw repealed to allow those who are homeless to sleep in Toronto parks.

Something Mayor John Tory is staunchly opposed to.

“Encampments in public parks remain unsafe, hundreds of calls to fires and and other kinds of emergencies, camps are unhealthy they just can’t be healthy with the sanitation and other kinds of situations, and they’re illegal.”

The city cleared several homeless encampments from parks this past summer, saying they were unsafe.
