Restaurant groups are calling on the federal government to extend subsidies put in place earlier in the pandemic.

Programs like the wage subsidy and rent subsidy are set to expire on October 23rd. Restaurants in Ontario are still not fully open to in person dining.

On the Tuesday edition of “Fight Back” with Libby Znaimer, Tony Elenis, the President and CEO of the Ontario Restaurant Association, says an announcement from Ottawa could be just days away.

“They are working around the clock to announce some good news,” said Elenis. “I do not know what the type of details there will be. We’re waiting for this any day. What I heard is this will be the first announcement of the new government and hopefully we’ll see a continuation into the spring of 2022.”

Restaurants in Ontario say they continue to be hampered by capacity restrictions and in-person dining rules.

They say it’s unfair venues like sports arenas and movie theatres are now allowed to reopen to full capacity (with rules in place) but restaurants still need strong rules.

Restaurant owners say people at sports will be sitting shoulder to shoulder eating without masks while distancing is still in place in restaurants.
