As with any new session of Parliament; federal or provincial, it begins with a Throne Speech.
Lieutenant-Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell delivered the Ford government’s agenda for the eight months leading to Ontario’s next election.
It focused mainly on what the Conservatives have done to support health-care and long-term care during COVID-19, while also highlighting the need to do more but with few specifics.
With more than 86% of eligible Ontarians having received at least one vaccine shot, the speech said the province is entering a ”new phase” of the pandemic, and while we may see an increase in infections with the arrival of colder weather it won’t be cause for panic.
”If additional public health measures are needed, they will be localized and targeted,” Dowdeswell said.
“At the advice of the chief medical officer, they will seek to minimize disruptions to businesses and families.  The ultimate goal, shared by all, is avoiding future lockdowns.”
Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath calls the speech ”thin gruel” with nothing new for patients, students, workers or small businesses.
Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca says ”it’s shocking that we had to wait so long to hear so little from Doug Ford after he’d been in hiding for months.”
Green Party Mike Schreiner says it was ”one of the most uninspiring Throne Speeches he’s ever heard.”
