Toronto-based celebrity chef Mark McEwan has filed for creditor protection that includes the 64-year-old’s restaurants and gourmet foods business.
McEwan Enterprises Inc. was struggling even before the pandemic and according to court documents, the company has not been profitable since 2017. In the court filing, the company expects to run out of cash by the last week of this month.
His restaurants, most of them in Toronto, have been closed for ten out of the past 18 months.
In addition to its six restaurants, McEwan Enterprises also runs two food halls and one gourmet grocery shop, and partners with Goodfood Market Corp., a meal-kit service.
The company employs 213 full-time and 55 part-time staff, all of whom it plans to keep on.
McEwan has appeared on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer several time, mostly recently at the beginning of the pandemic, to talk about the best diet for people with type two diabetes.
