Toronto’s mayor says when Health Canada and Ontario’s Ministry of Health give the go ahead for children ages 5 to 11 to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, public health staff will be ready to administer the shots.

John Tory explained this morning that Toronto’s initial COVID-19 vaccine rollout was successful on a global scale and the plan now is to do the same for the 5 to 11 year olds.

“So that the day they announce that we’re ready to go with actually giving the vaccination to those younger kids, we’re in a position to do so and make it easy for those families and easy for those kids,” Mayor Tory told CP24, “So, that’s why this group has been established yesterday (Monday) by (Chief Medical Officer) Dr. de Villa and that’s exactly what the objective is, to make sure it is as smooth as it was for older adults in the first phase of the vaccination.”

There are about 200,000 children in the 5 to 11 age group living in Toronto.

The vaccine for younger children is made by Pfizer, who’s researchers have come up with a dosage that works as well in children as the adult shot for those 12 and older.
