A child under the age of 10 in Waterloo Region has died from COVID.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang says the child had underlying health conditions.

”There were no school-related or childcare-relating exposures in this case,” added the region’s top doctor.

She calls it a ”rare, tragic circumstance” that serves as a ”devastating reminder of the serious nature of this virus.”

Doug Ford tweeted about the death, calling it ”absolutely gut-wrenching.”

In offering his condolences, the premier said the virus knows no bounds.

”It’s why we need every eligible Ontarian to get vaccinated — to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and those who can’t yet get vaccinated,” Ford added.
