The Conservatives National Campaign wants Justin Trudeau’s candidate in the Toronto riding of Spadina-Fort York to be immediately fired, and if elected, the Liberals must confirm he will not be allowed in caucus.
The Liberals have asked Kevin Vuong to ”pause” his campaign amid a media report he had been charged with sexual assault in 2019 — a charge that was later withdrawn.
A Liberal party spokesperson says it first learned of the situation Thursday and that they’ve asked Vuong to pause campaigning while they investigate.
Asked about it Friday morning, Justin Trudeau said they’re looking into it ”very carefully.”
”We are a party that always takes serious any allegations or reports of sexual harassment or intimidation or assault.  That has been clear from the very beginning,” the Liberal leader added.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says the decision not to fire Vuong or address other allegations against candidates contradicts his claims he’s a feminist.
”Earlier in this campaign, survivors of sexual assault watched for five days while Justin Trudeau defended Raj Saini,” Singh said in a statement.
”Again, Mr. Trudeau is refusing to fire a candidate who has been accused of sexual assault.  From sexual misconduct in the military to accusations against himself and his candidates, Justin Trudeau has repeatedly shown women that he doesn’t believe them,” the NDP leader added.
Saini, former MP for Kitchener-Centre, recently stepped down amid allegations he harassed a female staff member.
He denies the accusations.
