Four days until the federal election and housing continues to top COVID-19 as a key ballot box issue for GTA voters.

A Nanos Research survey polled 500 adult residents on their top issues ahead of the September 20th vote as well as the factors most likely to shape their vote.

Nik Nanos, who’s a regular guest on The Morning Zoom with Sam and Jane on Zoomer Radio, says about 32 percent of respondents said, unprompted, that affordable housing is the single biggest issue facing the GTA, while under 18 percent said it’s the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Folks are worried about the cost to rent, they’re worried about housing supply, they’re worried about the cost to pay their mortgage, and it speaks to the level of anxiety that’s out there for any individuals that live in the GTA on the housing front, and it’s top of mind,” Nanos explained, “It’s not a big surprise that the pandemic is still and important issue, but the housing concern is almost twice as important as the pandemic in the GTA.”

The release of this poll comes after the publication of another Nanos Research survey showing the Justin Trudeau Liberals have increased their lead in the vote rich GTA to 47 percent voter support, while the Erin O’Toole Conservatives have dropped to 27 percent support. Support for the Jagmeet Singh New Democrats is unchanged at 18 percent.

Interestingly, Conservative support appears to have gone to the right wing People’s Party of Canada, which has gained five points since August and now sits at 6 percent support in the GTA.

Support for the Green Party has slipped one point to two percent. In fact, polling in the Toronto Centre riding where Annamie Paul is running shows the Green Leader in third place behind the incumbent Liberal in first and the NDP candidate in second place.
