After longtime public opposition to the idea of a COVID-19 vaccine passport or certificate, the Ford government is expected to announce that very thing on Tuesday.
Premier Doug Ford and his cabinet are expected to meet and announce details of a plan not long after.
When previously speaking about his opposition to the concept of a province-backed vaccine certification, Ford said he doesn’t want to create a “split” society. He and his cabinet ministers have also said the small vaccine print out would be enough if people wanted a proof of vaccinations.
Critics say that small piece of paper is easily forged.
“Experience around the world has shown that this is something that does increase vaccine uptake,” said Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s medical officer of health. “We have a wonderful and safe set of vaccines that provide protection against (the) Delta (variant).”
B.C., Manitoba and Quebec already have provincial vaccine certification programs.
