Adolescents can now receive Moderna’s vaccine.
Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada made the announcement on social media.
”After a thorough and independent scientific review of the evidence, Health Canada has determined that the vaccine is safe and effective at preventing COVID-19 in youth aged 12 to 17.”
Pfizer was approved for Canadians aged 12 to 15 in early May.
It was approved for those 16 and older last December, the same month Moderna’s vaccine received the green light for Canadians over 18.
Moderna applied for approval for giving it to youth in June.
While Health Canada only took a few weeks to approve Pfizer’s use in adolescents, the department has not explained why the Moderna review took over two months.
Europe approved Moderna for children more than one month ago.
