Everyone knows Bob Ross as the curly haired painter making happy trees, in his zen-like delivery.

Ross hosted the TV series The Joy of Painting for only eleven years from 1983 to 1994 but filmed a 403 episodes.

The last episode aired in 1994, and Ross passed away from lymphoma only a year later at the age of 52. But Ross remains just as popular today as when he was part of the popular culture of the 1980s and ’90s.

A new documentary out this week Bob Ross; Happy Accidents, Betrayal, and Greed aims to paint a fuller picture of the icon. The problem is, Ross wasn’t a hugely interesting guy. A colleague says that he could be a little ornery at times, and loved fast cars but there are no deep dark secrets or skeletons in his closet.

In fact, the most outrageous truth unearthed about Ross’ personal life is that his Afro was a perm.

The documentary is produced by comedic actress Melissa McCarthy.
