When party leaders take to the stage over two nights next month for the English and French language debates, there will be one fewer leader compared to the last election.

Peoples’ Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier will not be taking part this time round.

Leaders’ Debates Commissioner David Johnston has confirmed the five leaders taking part represent the Liberals, Conservatives, NDP, Bloc Québecois and Greens.

The PPC didn’t satisfy the requirements in any of the three criteria. They have no MP elected to the House of Commons, the party didn’t receive 4% of total votes cast in the last election and it didn’t have 4% of support across the country five days after the recent election call.

Bernier’s presence itself had been a subject of debate. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh said Bernier shouldn’t be allowed due to false statements on COVID-19 and vaccines. He argued Bernier could harm public safety if allowed to participate.
