She has ruled classical music’s premier annual event for the past quarter century.

Now, the Queen of Salzburg, as Helga Rabl-Stadler is known and who has served as the festival’s president and public face, is stepping down at the age of 73.

The Salzburg Festival is a massive operation, with a budget of more than $76 million.  It stages some 200 opera, concert and drama performances over a six week period starting every July.

The governor of the region calls Rabl-Stadler “the living embodiment of the Salzburg Festival,” noting that last summer, when very few arts institutions were putting on full-scale productions, Salzburg pressed ahead with a curtailed but robust program.

This summer, Salzburg returned at nearly full strength.

A search for her replacement is underway.
