The Opposition took time on the campaign trail to criticize Justin Trudeau’s handling on Afghanistan.

Conservative leader Erin O’Toole says Ottawa’s effort to get diplomats, Armed Forces personnel and Afghans out of the country, is too little too late.

“Mr. Trudeau has known for six months that the U-S were going to withdraw and left some of the interpreters and contractors that were still there, that’s unacceptable.”

N-D-P Leader Jagmeet Singh also expressed concern over Afghanistan during a campaign stop in Toronto.

“These are people that put their lives at risk, every single one of them should have a path of coming to Canada, them and their families, at a minimum.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says so far, 34 Canadian diplomats and Canadian Armed Forces personnel and 807 Afghans have been airlifted out of so far and promises to get many more out.

“But we have to recognize, the situation is extremely fluid right now, and exceedingly dangerous.”

Trudeau says Canada is working with the U-S and Britain to try to get as many Afghans as possible out of the country in the coming weeks.

The country has fallen to the Taliban and seven people have died at Kabul airport, where thousands have gathered in the hope they can board a plane and get out of the country.
