James Ramer will stay on as interim Toronto Police Chief until at least the end of 2022.
The Police Services Board, of which Mayor John Tory is a member, has announced the extension.
”Chief Ramer has done an excellent job in this role over the last years,” said the mayor in a statement.
”I am confident that Chief Ramer can provide that needed stability and will be ready to help the next Chief transition into the role.”
A seven-member team was appointed by the police services board to search for a new chief.
Ramer’s already said he does not want to be considered for the new job, which he repeated in an internal memo to police officers and civilian employees.
He took over last summer for Mark Saunders, who had been chief from April 2015 to July 2020.
