There is every indication when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau goes to the new governor general, Mary Simon will accept his request to dissolve parliament and call and election.

Ottawa University Law Professor Errol Mendes says the governor general as a representative of the Queen has in theory the power to refuse a request from Trudeau to dissolve parliament. However, he says, that power has not been used for many decades because Canada has been regarded as an independent country from the United Kingdom.

Mendes goes on to say there is no chance whatsoever, Simon will accede to the urging of NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh for her to refuse Trudeau’s request.

Singh has told Governor General Mary Simon there’s no justification since the government has won every confidence vote in the House of Commons.

But the prime minister says it’s ironic Singh is positioning it this way.

“When Conservatives in the House used every procedural tactic to try and delay, to block, to slow things down, the NDP stood aside and watched,” Trudeau explained, “They could have stood with us to move forward faster on these important progressive pieces of legislation, but they didn’t.”

Trudeau did not directly answer a question on whether he believes the governor general should accept an election call request from him and whether her refusal could undermine Canada’s independence.
