The former general manager of White Cliffe Terrace Retirement Residence east of Oshawa facing confinement charges after Durham Regional Police allege the door handles of some residents’ rooms were removed earlier this year.
Police began an investigation February 12 after receiving a complaint about the home in Courtice.
It was alleged that staff had removed the door handles to some rooms.
In March, the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority, which said it was alerted by a whistleblower, published the findings of a February 4 inspection.
Then in a letter to families dated February 10, the company that runs the home, Verve Senior Living said ”a small” number of handles that had been removed were immediately reinstalled.
Charged with two counts of unlawful confinement is 40-year-old Tawab Karimi.
