Residents of Quebec are being offered a third dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine if they want to travel to countries that don’t recognize their vaccination status.

A statement from Quebec’s health department says an additional dose is being made available because some countries don’t consider people fully vaccinated if they have received a mix of COVID-19 vaccines.

At the same time, Quebecers are being warned it’s up to the recipient to seek advice and weigh the risks before getting an extra dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.

Here in Ontario, there has been a request from both Health Minister Christine Elliot and Solicitor General Sylvia Jones for the federal Liberals to ask the World Health Organization to update its guidance to international partners that mixing vaccines should be internationally accepted as a complete vaccine regimen.

The ministers argue in an open letter that the AstraZeneca vaccine, which is not approved by the U.S. Federal Drug Authority, should be seen as valid internationally on any certificate or passport. The AstraZeneca shot is listed for emergency use by the WHO.
