As she officially became Canada’s 30th Governor General and first Indigenous person to hold the position as the Queen’s representative in the country, Mary Simon promised to bring Canadians together.
”I have heard from Canadians who described a renewed sense of possibility for our country and hope that i can bring people together,” said Simon in her remarks after the swearing-in ceremony.
She also vowed to use her post at Rideau Hall to work against climate change while advocating for mental health and reconciliation.
”My view is that reconciliation is a way of life and requires work every day,” added Simon.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the ceremony in the Senate that Canada needs someone like Simon now.
”In this moment of unprecedented change; of rebuilding from the pandemic, of fighting the climate crisis, of walking forward on the path of reconciliation, we need your vision of a stronger Canada for everyone.”
