It’s starting out hazy Tuesday across southern Ontario and some regions of southern Quebec with possible high levels of air pollution due to smoke from ongoing forest fires in northwestern Ontario.

Wildfires in Ontario’s northwest have been sending heavy smoke south, prompting the national weather agency to issue several special air quality advisories, including for Toronto and Ottawa.

Residents in the affected areas may experience increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

Conditions are expected to improve later Tuesday with the passage of a cold front.
