Matthew Loden is stepping down from his leadership role at Toronto Symphony Orchestra to return to his hometown Houston, Texas to become Dean of Rice University’s School of Music.

Loden joined the TSO in 2018 and had a significant impact on the organization, which included hiring its new music director Gustavo Gimeno.

Not only did Loden help the organization navigate thru the challenges of a pandemic, he also oversaw the premieres of many new works and secured the largest individual gift to any Canadian orchestra from the Mary Beck estate $12.5M.

In a statement, Loden says it’s difficult to leave the Toronto arts community but the decision to return to Texas was deeply personal—to be closer to family— and coincided with an offer from Rice University, where he began his career as Director of Music Admissions.

Loden’s final day at the TSO will be September 22 and begins at Rice University the following month.
