Canada’s 30th governor-general is Inuk leader and former ambassador Mary Simon.
In making the announcement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the Queen accepted his recommendation.
”I can confidently say that my appointment is a historic and inspirational moment for Canada and an important step forward on the long path towards reconciliation,” said Simon.
”Indeed, my appointment comes at an especially reflective and dynamic time in our shared history.”
The post has been vacant since Julie Payette stepped down in January following an independent review on the toxic work environment that had developed at Rideau Hall.
