Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister says she’s disturbed that the head of the navy is still in his job.
Vice-Admiral Craig Baines apologized this month for having golfed with former chief of the defence staff Jonathan Vance who’s under investigation for allegations of sexual misconduct.
Chrystia Freeland says she’s also surprised Baines was able to kept his job after the apology and questions what message it sends to women in uniform.
“How would I feel if I were a Canadian woman in the Armed Forces and what would that decision tell me about how seriously my bosses were taking the essential work of transforming the culture on the Canadian Armed Forces and I don’t think if I were wearing a uniform today I would be reassured by that decision.”
Freeland adds that Canadian women in uniform work in a toxic system that must change.
