Ontario’s outgoing medical officer of health says it’s vital that people consider the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines as interchangeable.

Doctor David Williams made the comment with word that some residents are either cancelling or postponing their second COVID-19 doses because they were expecting Pfizer but were then offered Moderna.

“We would ask that you not reschedule any appointments to try and get a second dose of Pfizer at a later date because we have a large supply of Moderna coming right now,” Dr. Williams explained Monday, “Some are saying how long should or could I wait, but we’re saying if you have an opportunity to then proceed with Moderna as your second dose as compared to Pfizer, because we want you getting the full protection as soon as possible.”

This week’s Pfizer shipments have been delayed slightly, while at the same time, there’s been an influx of Moderna vaccine.

Pfizer and Moderna are recognized as interchangeable and either is also recommended as a second dose follow up for first dose AstraZeneca vaccine recipients.

AstraZeneca first dose recipients may also receive a second dose of AstraZeneca.
