Five patients and three staff who’ve either been partially and fully vaccinated have been infected in a COVID-19 outbreak at Toronto Western Hospital Hospital.

University Health Network reports so far, the cases are mild and the majority are likely the infectious Delta variant.

The province’s outbreak response coordinator Dr. Dirk Huyer says that’s proof vaccination helps reduce severity of infection.

“The importance of moving forward with getting first doses and continuing to increase the number that we have vaccinated as well as getting second doses when that opportunity is presented to you as quickly as you can,” said Dr. Huyer.

University Health Network’s Infectious Disease expert Dr. Alon Vaisman says it’s NOT surprising to see people become infected even after they’ve been vaccinated.

“The most important aspect is that none have developed any serious disease thus far,” said Dr. Vaisman.

U-H-N is urging staff to keep taking precautions to guard against the virus.
