Despite all the fame, fortune and money involved in being an original member of the Beach Boys, the tragedies of Brian Wilson’s life make a story well told.
The musician, who is closing in on 80-years old, is the subject of “Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road,” which premiered last night at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
Wilson was the creative force behind the Beach Boys, but had to deal with an abusive, hard-driving father, Schizoaffective disorder where he’d hear voices berating and belittling him and band members often resistant to where he was going musically.
In the documentary, super stars like Elton John and Bruce Springsteen, are eloquent in describing what made Wilson’s work unique and enduring.
Curiously, nerves drove Wilson off the concert circuit at the height of the Beach Boys’ success, but now says he loves performing.
Wilson turns 79 on Father’s Day.
