In the wake of the discovery of what are believed to be the remains of 215 children at a former residential school in B.C., the Ford government’s announced it’s earmarking $10-million over three years to identify, investigate, protect and commemorate residential school burial sites and cemeteries in Ontario.

”There is painful but necessary work ahead, and we must confront what happened for reconciliation to be achieved,” said Doug Ford.

The province will identify experts such as archaeologists, forensic specialists and historians to lead the research,, analysis and technical field work.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) estimates at least 426 children who attended residential schools in the province are known to have died, while an unknown number are still missing.

The commission has identified 12 locations of unmarked burial sites but the province says there are likely more.

A national Indian Residential School Crisis Line has been set up to provide support for survivors and those affected by latest reports.
