Pandemic restrictions have been relaxed to allow mourners to attend this evening’s vigil in London for a Muslim family killed in what’s being called a terrorist act by many, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
London Mayor Ed Holder expects to see a ”massive” turnout given the outpouring of support for the family and community.
Relatives have identified the victims as 46-year-old Salman Afzaal, his 44-year-old wife Madiha Salman, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna Salman and her 74-year-old grandmother.
A fundraising webpage describes the father as a physiotherapist and cricket enthusiast, and says his wife was working on her PhD in civil engineering at Western University.
Their daughter was finishing her first year of high school and her grandmother was said to be a ”pillar” of the family.
Two online fundraisers for the 9-year-old boy who survived have surpassed $1-million.
Global News is reporting friends of the 20-year-old suspect say he was raised in a religious Christian family and one Muslim friend says he did not seem intolerant nor violent.
Meanwhile, B’nai Brith Canada is condemning the attack in the ”strongest possible terms.”
The organization also says contrary to speculation and dangerous misinformation spreading online, the suspect is not Jewish.
B’nai Brith Canada is concerned this could fuel attacks against innocent Canadian Jews, and ”it must be called out.”
CEO Michael Mostyn says ”Canada needs to be a place where everyone feels welcome and safe.
The Jewish community and B’nai Brith want our Muslim brothers and sisters to know that we are with you in this struggle and we will not be silent.
We call on all communities to offer their support for the loved ones of the victims, and to add their voices to the calls for justice in this case and in preventing acts of incitement and extremism which are now all too prevalent online.”
