As second doses of COVID-19 vaccine begin to ramp up nationwide, new guidance on mixing of vaccine types could be just days away.

There is a report the National Advisory Committee on Immunization will update it’s guidance soon to recommend a second shot of Moderna or Pfizer as a follow up to a first dose of AstraZeneca.

The updated NACI guidance is based on emerging research from Spain and the United Kingdom which found mixing and matching AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines was both safe and effective at preventing COVID-19.

The process is beginning in Manitoba and British Columbia. Quebec began mixing doses for the most vulnerable earlier this year.

Here in Ontario, Health Minister Christine Elliott has yet to comment on any plans to do the same. So far, she has only spoken about study results which show a second dose of AstraZeneca is much less likely to produce an extremely rare blood clot than a first dose of AZ.

Ontario residents who received AstraZeneca as a first dose to date only have one choice for a second dose and that is another shot of AstraZeneca 12 weeks after the first shot.

The latest federal government data says more than 13-million people have received at least one dose of Pfizer, 3.5 million have been injected with at least one dose of Moderna and more than 2.1 million have received a first shot of AstraZeneca.
