The National Advisory Committee on Immunization says given increasing supply, the country should deliver second doses of COVD-19 vaccines ”as soon as possible.”
NACI says those at highest risk of becoming severely ill or dying should be prioritized at the same time or after the remaining eligible population receives their first shot.
Committee Chair Dr. Caroline Quach-Thanh says in a statement, that the panel’s recommended four-month interval should be the ”upper limit,” and provinces and territories should aim to start administering second doses as quickly as local logistics allow.
Shortly before that announcement, Doug Ford announced starting Monday, Ontario’s shortening the interval beginning with those 80 and older.
The premier says the move is possible because 65% of all adults have had at least one dose.
The shortened interval could be as small as 28-days for Pfizer and Moderna in the coming months, depending on supply.
Those who got a first shot of AstraZeneca will be offered a second dose after 12-weeks, however it could be a different vaccine, depending on awaited federal guidance.
People will keep their original appointments if they don’t rebook.
