Doug Ford’s giving experts until 5 p.m. tomorrow to offer advice on whether it’s safe to reopen schools for the final month of this scholastic year.
The premier’s sent a letter to more than 50 public health agencies, hospitals and teachers’ unions asking for input on the safety of reopening, the risk posed by virus variants and whether an anticipated rise in cases is acceptable.
Ford’s also wondering if one vaccine dose is sufficient to protect teachers, and if classes should resume before indoor gatherings are allowed in July.
Many doctors and experts have called for the immediate reopening of schools, saying it’s important for children’s mental health.
NDP Education critic Marit Stiles feels the letter comes too late.
”It’s the end of May, and just now Mr. Ford is asking health and education experts for feedback?
Doug Ford needs to stop treating kids’ education as an afterthought, and spend what it takes to make schools safe, including smaller class sizes and better ventilation,” Stiles says in a statement.
