Once a week, the rooms of a Paris palliative care home reverberate with the sound of a cello.
55-year-old concert cellist Clair Oppert who trained at the Moscow Conservatory, visits the facility each Friday to play for residents many of whom are struggling with physical pain as well as coming to terms with incurable illness.
Oppert has been playing to end-of-life patients for almost a decade since she first visited a nursing home with her cello.
Cancer patient Micheline Leroux finds the music helps to escape her constant pain.
Besides the weekly recitals, Oppert has made it her mission to demonstrate the therapeutic effects of music by taking part in medical studies on the subject.
