The Ford government’s expecting to receive more than 254,000 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine next week.
But they’re being held for second shots.
The province has announced it’s suspending giving AstraZeneca for first shots because of an increased risk of a rare blood clot linked to the product.
Currently, there are about 50,000 doses remaining; with most set to expire at the end of May or beginning of June.
The province is trying to come up with a plan to use them before they spoil.
The government’s still determining when to start allowing second shots of AstraZeneca and is also reviewing the possibility of using a different product for the second shot.
Officials here are awaiting results of a British study.
There have been at least 8 cases in Ontario of the rare blood clot out of the more than 900,000 AstraZeneca shots that have been given.
