An emergency order issued by the Ford government would permit overcrowded hospitals to move some patients into nursing homes – even without their consent.
”There may be some situations but they will be extremely rare where a transfer might need to be made without a patient’s consent,” said Health Minister Christine Elliott.
She also announced the temporary order will only be used in the most urgent situations.
”This was a very difficult decision to make.  However, the consequences of not doing so could be devastating if we don’t have the hospital beds we urgently need to care for the growing number of COVID-19 patients across the province.”
Elliott also says every effort would be made to ensure any patients transferred to long-term care have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
The health minister adds the transfers will only take place if the patients’ medical teams are confident moves will not compromise their condition.
Ontario’s hospitals have been facing a major capacity crunch as the third wave hits the province hard.
This news comes as the government allows personal support workers to assist in multiple nursing homes.
