The buildup of Russian troops on the borders with Ukraine is described as the largest ”ever.”
Following a virtual meeting of the European Union’s foreign ministers, the E-U’s foreign policy chief stated the obvious.
”It’s clear that it’s a matter of concern when you deploy a lot of troops,” said Josep Borrell.
”Well, a spark can jump here or there.”
Borrell said it’s evident there’s a risk of further escalation.
While he also described the condition of imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny as ”critical,” and that the 27-country group would hold the Kremlin accountable for his health and safety, ”for the time being, there is no move in the field of more sanctions” to be imposed on Russia.
More than 14,000 people have died in seven years of fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine following Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula.
”We call on Russia to withdraw their troops,” added Borrell.
